We wholeheartedly invite you to an experiential workshop, centered on the experience of being in dialogue. The workshop is suited for people who are interested in the field of mental health care, are currently working in the field, or wish doing so in future. We warmly welcome people with lived experience of being diagnosed with a mental illness who are currently working as peer consultants, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, social workers and psychologists. The workshop will be a chance to get a taste of what Open Dialogue might offer for those, considering to take part in a year long foundation training in Open Dialogue that is going to start in March 2018.
The Open Dialogue Approach (ODA) is considered to be rather a way of life than a method or a technique (Seikkula, 2011). At the same time, the fact of being in dialogue seems so obvious and familiar that we may see it as something we are already doing in our practice with clients. Dialogue may well be one of the most natural human activities. However at the same time it may be very hard to attain in contexts and environments, where we are used to knowing our answers even prior to asking questions and often also to taking decisions for other people. During this workshop we will be dealing with the challenge of bringing the philosophical principles and values of Open Dialogue to ways how we meet and work with our clients.
Over the course of two days participants will have an opportunity to experience the Open Dialogue Approach in its practical form. Aside from practical exercises, there will also be space for practice sharing. Furthermore, there will be a possibility to learn about the lecturer's experiences with the process of practical introduction of the open dialogue approach to the mental health care systems in Poland and Germany.
Since Open Dialogue is a multidisciplinary team approach, it is very important for its philosophy and values to be shared across the team. The necessary question arises – how do we go about creating dialogical practices together? There may also be other specific dilemmas arising from practice, for example whether and how or to what extent to go about working with clients, who are not interested in collaboration (assertive outreach). This workshop will try to provide space for tackling these but also many other questions you may have.
About the lecturer:
Dr. Werner Schütze is a German psychiatrist, psychotherapist and a lecturer. Since 1981, he worked as a psychiatrist for children and young adults and as a family therapist. In 1991 he became a senior psychiatrist at an urban psychiatric hospital in Berlin, where he specialized in working with people with psychotic illnesses, people who had problems with substance abuse and addictive behavior, as well as providing crisis intervention and trauma therapy. Subsequently, he directed a psychiatric hospital in Nauen , in the Havelland, where he worked at implementing and developing a way of practice inspired by the Open Dialogue Approach.
He is currently involved in implementing this in Germany, Poland and US. In Poland, he has been the main lecturer for the Foundation of Open Dialogue that offered training courses since 2013. This training will also take place in the Czech Republic next year.
